Our Story
Upon arriving in Newburg, Dr. Elizabeth teGroen noticed the lack of educational opportunities available outside of Springfield and St. Louis. She knew that if children had a place to explore, they would gain curiosity and want to learn more about the world around them. With this in mind, Dr. teGroen set out to start the Newburg Children’s Museum of Natural History.
Renovations started in May 2007 with the donated use of a two-story building sharing a courtryard with the historic Houston House. Many people in Newburg rallied to help get started. Bake sales and other fundraisers were held to raise funding. Volunteers like the Stevensons, Brinkleys, and the Davis brothers helped insulate, update electricity, and replace windowpanes.
Volunteer soldiers from Fort Leonard Wood and many Newburg residents repaired and painted the walls and the plumbing and air conditioning were modernized.
